Gather Your Equipment and Tools

Step 1: Gather Your Equipment and Tools

Before you begin setting up your pump jack system, ensure you have all the necessary parts and tools on hand for the assembly.

To get started with your pump jack assembly, you will need the following parts:

  • Pump Jacks (minimum of two)
  • Aluminum Poles (sized according to your project height requirements)
  • Pole Foot and Pole Connector
  • Platform Stage (scaffold planks)
  • Braces and Workbenches
  • Guardrails and Safety Equipment
  • Tools: Wrench, drill, bolts, nuts, and safety gear (hard hat, gloves, harness)

Step 2: Assemble the Poles

  1. Position the Poles: Choose a level ground area close to the building where you will set up the pump jack system. Place the poles vertically against the building.
  2. Attach the Pole Foot: Secure the pole foot to the base of each pole. The pole foot will provide stability and prevent the pole from sinking into soft ground.
  3. Connect Additional Poles (if needed): If your project requires greater height, connect additional poles using pole connectors. Make sure the poles are securely fastened and aligned straight.

Step 3: Attach Support Braces

  1. Secure the Roof Brace: Attach a support brace to the roof or top edge of the building. This brace will hold the top of the pole in place, preventing movement during use.
  2. Install Middle Support Braces: Attach additional support braces at regular intervals along the pole. These will keep the pole steady and reduce sway, providing a stable base for the platform.
  3. Anchor the Poles to the Building: Use bolts or screws to secure the poles to the building at the location of the support braces. Ensure all connections are tight to prevent any movement during use.

Step 4: Install the Pump Jacks

  1. Position the Pump Jacks on the Poles: Slide the pump jacks onto the poles from the bottom. Make sure the gripping mechanism faces the building.
  2. Attach the Workbench to the Pump Jacks: Align the mounting holes of the workbench with the holes on the pump jack. Insert the bolts and tighten them securely with a wrench. This workbench will serve as a support for workers and tools.
  3. Check for Stability: Before proceeding, ensure that the pump jacks and workbench are securely attached and stable.

Step 5: Set Up the Platform Stage

  1. Position the Platform Stage: Place the scaffold planks on top of the workbenches, ensuring they are centered and balanced. The platform should span between the two pump jacks.
  2. Secure the Platform: Use chains or safety locks to secure the platform stage to the pump jack system. This will prevent the platform from shifting or slipping during use.
  3. Install Guardrails and Safety Nets: Attach guardrails to all open sides of the platform to prevent falls. Install safety nets between the workbench and the platform stage as an additional safety measure.

Step 6: Raise the Platform to the Desired Height

  1. Position the Foot Lever: To raise the platform, step on the foot lever of each pump jack simultaneously. The pump jack will engage the gripping mechanism on the pole, lifting the platform.
  2. Lift the Platform: Slowly and evenly pump both jacks until the platform reaches the desired height. Make sure to raise both sides of the platform evenly to prevent tilting.
  3. Secure the Position: Once at the desired height, ensure the platform is level and stable. Check that the pump jacks are securely gripping the poles and that the platform is safely locked in place.

Step 7: Final Safety Check

  1. Inspect All Connections: Double-check all bolts, screws, and connections to ensure everything is tightly secured. Pay special attention to the pole braces, pump jacks, and platform locks.
  2. Ensure Proper Weight Distribution: Make sure the load on the platform does not exceed the system’s capacity, typically around 500 lbs. Only two workers should be on the platform at any time, and no one should stand on the workbench.
  3. Use Safety Gear: All workers should wear appropriate safety gear, including harnesses and helmets. If working at high elevations, ensure that fall-arresting gear is properly connected.

Step 8: Lowering and Dismantling the Pump Jack System

  1. Lower the Platform: To lower the platform, release the grip on each pump jack by stepping on the release lever. Slowly and evenly lower both sides of the platform.
  2. Dismantle the System: Once the platform is safely on the ground, disassemble the pump jacks, platform, and poles. Remove all braces and anchors from the building.
  3. Store Equipment Properly: Clean and store all pump jack components in a dry, secure location to prevent damage and rust.
